A Film of String & Wood - gallery show

ETC Gallery (inside Dogtown Realty)
2009 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA

Show runs through May 22nd

Coinciding with the release of Ezekiel Honig's new record (on the Berlin-based label, Abandoned Audio), A Film of String & Wood combines an art show with a record release event, highlighting the crossing paths of visual and audio. Here, a union of sound and image is not relegated to a perfectly synced performance, but is rather a relationship in concept across time, physical space, and mediums - across a feedback of influence and flexible translation. While originating in musical work, rather than existing as abstractions of sound, the textured paintings presented here are influenced by sound, by a tone that permeates from sound to visual and back again. Similar to the music, the pieces have a melancholic warmth that grounds them despite the complete absence of figurative reality, folding colors in on themselves in the manner that melodies are smudged and self-layering.

Known predominantly as a musical artist, releasing critically acclaimed albums for more than 10 years via his own Anticipate and Microcosm imprints, as well as other like-minded labels such as Type, Unfoundsound, and Other People, Honig has always focused on more than sound. Whether it be curating a body of work by musical artists from around the world, designing and creating art for music packaging, developing an online curriculum for sound production, or writing a book concretizing his sonic philosophies, his directive has always been centered in connecting threads, on using sound as a focal point that allows spilling out into various disciplines. A Film of String & Wood is the culmination of a visual aspect of this way of thinking.
